Painting helmets became popular in the ’70s, especially with the introduction of full-face crash helmets. Before then, drivers had plain, generally unpainted crash helmets with limited protection.

The color schemes seen on the helmets of drivers I think, are the best way to recognize them when they’re out on the circuit.
